How Is a YAG Laser Used in Ophthalmology?

In the world of ophthalmology, laser technology has revolutionized the way eye conditions are treated, with the YAG laser standing out as a particularly significant advancement. YAG is a type of laser commonly used in various eye surgeries, offering precision, efficacy, and minimal discomfort. The versatility and effectiveness of the YAG laser in treating a range of ocular issues underscore its indispensable role in modern ophthalmology. From improving vision post-cataract surgery to managing and preventing glaucoma, the YAG laser provides targeted treatments that are both minimally invasive and highly effective, ensuring better eye health and improved quality of life for patients.

The most frequent application of the YAG laser is in a posterior capsulotomy. Patients who have undergone cataract surgery may experience a secondary clouding of the capsule that originally held the natural lens, known as posterior capsule opacification (PCO). This can blur vision months or years after successful cataract removal. The YAG laser precisely creates a small opening in the clouded capsule, restoring clear vision with a quick, outpatient procedure that typically requires no anesthesia and is virtually painless.

Glaucoma, specifically angle-closure glaucoma, is another condition where the YAG laser is extensively utilized. This type of glaucoma can suddenly increase intraocular pressure, posing an immediate threat to vision. The YAG laser performs a peripheral iridotomy by making a small hole in the iris, facilitating fluid flow within the eye to alleviate pressure. This procedure is crucial for preventing or treating acute attacks of angle-closure glaucoma.
